what kiligs the karess?: my favorite romantic films

given that it's still the valentine season and all the buzz is about luuurrve, i decided to join the bandwagon by presenting you my favorite romantic films of all time.

yes, i do have the romance bug in me. i just refuse to acknowledge it... sometimes. (let me fill you in on a little secret: i cry at movies when i'm watching them alone).

here are some of my favorite romantic movies, in no particular order. yes, spoilers abound.

1. casablanca - swaggering bogart + sultry bergman = fireworks. the film was interesting, not just because of its political angle, but because it was so real it hurt. bogart plays the slick, frigid, cynical club owner rick, whose resolve melts when reunited with his lady love ilea, played by bergman.

maybe the best thing about this movie was the fact that hey, they didn't end up together. it was a difficult decision on both their parts, but someone had to let go. it was something totally un-hollywood, and it made me proud.

2. a moment to remember - this korean movie is a CLASSIC (segue: everybody loved that other korean flick my sassy girl, except me. i found it too sugary-sweet). it makes you all mushy, soft, and giggly one minute, then sobbing, depressed, and dejected the next. the first chunk of the film narrates how soo-jin (the female) and chol-soon (the male) become magkadevelop and eventually, marry. in the course of their marriage, soo-jin contracts a rare kind of alzheimer's and very rapidly loses her memories. the normally hard, unfeeling, and unaffectionate chol-soon suddenly becomes sweet, loving, and human. the entire film is enough to make you feel, like, five emotions all at the same time. hunt for a DVD of this.

3. 50 first dates - i'm noticing a pattern here--i like love stories based on impossible circumstances. i'm sure you guys know the drill of this one: adam sandler has to woo a hopelessly-amnesiac drew barrymore, treating each daily encounter as if it''s their first time to meet. real awww-inducing, for me.

...to be continued!
