the tale of the rich young man

Mark 10:17-22 tells us about a rich young man who asked Jesus how to have eternal life. He may have desired to experience this, yet he could not give up the worldly inheritance that was before him. He may have went thru all the motions of what could be considered "good" and "moral," yet he could not give up his possessions for the sake of following Jesus. Perhaps the thought was unbearable to him, given that he had invested on these things his whole life up to that point. He may have even worked for a lot of these things for a portion of his existence.

Unfortunately for him, and for all of us, all these things, like all things temporary, can only last for so long. Yet Jesus is the one guaranteed investment that we have. Jesus promised this man that he would have "treasure in heaven,"  yet that promise had a condition of selling everything he had and giving it all to the poor. For Mr. RYM, his earthly life was far too precious and valuable than the eternal life that was awaiting him, should he have decided to follow Jesus.

Following Jesus entails a process of self-denial, cross-carrying, and complete surrender. The necessary pre-requisite for doing these things would be counting the cost. Following Jesus brings joy, yes, and peace, and righteousness, but at the same time it involves a lot of risks. It entails rejection, persecution, hardship, and even death. After all, we were never promised a storm-free life, but a storm-proof one. In spite of these, though, God's love is unfailing and we are guaranteed that we will never be separated from his love (Romans 8: 38-39). Following Jesus is costly, yes, but the return of investment is priceless. It will the greatest treasure we will ever have, one that will not be ruined by moths and dust and wear & tear. Jesus alone is our very great reward.

Mark 9:35 NKJV – If anyone deserves to be first, he should be last and servant of all.

If we want to lead–if we want to be promoted–we first need to humble ourselves. Our promotion is not dependent on our own greatness or goodness, on our talents and abilities, on being a “mover and shaker.” It is entirely dependent on God. As we humble ourselves to him, as we allow him to shape us and mold us to be the human beings he wants us to be, He will be the one to exalt us in due time.

Success is doing what God wants me to do. It is not measured by recognition, fame, wealth, and power. Our pursuit of success should not, in fact, be entirely dependent on these external factors. Jesus said to seek first his kingdom and his righteousness–and the surefire promise after that was all things would be given to us. The concept of “all” leaves nothing out. things we perceive that will give us satisfaction are only temporal. They are nothing compared to the person of God himself.

some thoughts on pain and suffering

it is a beautiful feeling, knowing that God is in the midst of our pain. it may be hard to see him at the onset, but he’s there . . . waiting for you to come to him. words aren’t enough to describe it.

+++

the greatest comfort that exists is knowing that God is in our pain. we may resort to what is familiar or usual as a means to escape from what will cause us discomfort, but these escape hatches merely provide temporal relief. if we want to experience the comfort that is true, real, and eternal, we need to hold on to God and never let go. only then will we be able to face pain head-on and say, “my God is greater than you.”

+++

“Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” ~ 2 Corinthians 4: 16b-18 NIV

learning never ends

i really am in a contemplative mood lately.

while having lunch and watching So Close on the cafeteria flat screen TV, i realized that i don’t really remember how my mother taught me how to use a spoon and a fork while eating. i do remember that she sat down with me and taught me how to use the utensils properly. the details are quite sketchy, given that so much has happened from the time i first learned until today. but eventually i also learned how to use chopsticks as i grew older, among other things.

and then i realized too that the learning process never really ends, and is never really limited to mere spoon and fork. i don’t remember how i learned how to read, and write, and surf the internet, but i know that time, energy, and resources were invested, and that at the end of the day, what was learned proved to be valuable, and was intended to be used and carried out in daily living.

someday, too, we’re all gonna be teaching what we’ve been learning, and sharing it to others. and as the teaching process comes, we learn something new again–how to be patient, how to explain things more thoroughly in such a way that the other person would understand, etc.

we learn. again and again and again. it’s a cyclical thing and the process never really ends.a

there are places i remember.

it was just three years ago when i was an unwitting, unemployed, oversheltered young adult, hating the world and how my life turned out thus far, and not knowing how it would be the next few years. that sunday, the 23rd of july, was cold and rainy, and as my sister and i walked thru the glass doors of that church in the fourth floor of Galleria mall, i had no idea that my life would never be the same after that.

i never really imagined that i would be where i am now. from being unemployed, i have had three jobs–the most recent and current one being my dream job. i’ve also gone thru pushing and pulling, moved to different locations, experienced joys and sorrows, received answered prayers and awesome miracles, and . . . i am still experiencing these things day by day. all because God has made himself known to me–through a relationship with him, first of all, and through relationships with other people. people whom i now consider friends.

our church has just celebrated its 25th anniversary as a movement, and after hearing the stories of the people who’d been around since Day One, i’ve realized that there is only one thing that really matters in this life: honoring God. everything falls into place from there. as we do so, we can make an impact to generations and to nations. Jesus Christ is the glue that holds us all together and makes us complete in spite of our incompleteness.

i am excited to see everything else that will unfold

What I've Learned From Being Part of a Big (Surrogate) Family

1. Learn to share. Whether it's time, food, a good story, appliances,  your prior location to home, or simply how your day went, learn how to share it and not get freaked out when they ask. Yes, they really are bound to ask. Besides, you know you want them to :D

2. Always inform them of your whereabouts especially when you're going home late. Tactical interrogation by a protective mother and a more protective older brother is bound to occur lest you forget.

3. Noise is inevitable, especially with four children at home with different temperaments and artistic tastes. Live with it.

4. There are a myriad ways of expressing love, and they are not limited to mushyness and corny-ness.

5. Hugs from younger siblings are comforting.

6. Banter with younger siblings is fun and stress-relieving. Especially when long-running jokes are involved.

7. Be not afraid to burp, or cry, or lose your composure in front of them. (Truth be told, I am still working on this. Especially the crying part when watching movies. However, I have lost my composure countless times, especially when insects are involved.)

8. You are a part of the academic research process, as well as various other processes that involve certain degrees of responsibility. Be prepared to answer questions. Also, be prepared to teach them how to get to the achieved result.

9. It is never too late to learn the basics.

10. At the end of the day, no matter how FAIL you've been, family is still family. Even if you were born from another mother.

from personalitystyle.com

A team player, Karess readily relinquishes personal interests and goals to accommodate those close to her. She is loyal to a fault; but others may sometimes question her unwavering dedication to current relationships and methods. Karess values security, and usually does her best to avoid sudden changes in her environment or situation (haha).

Karess is a fact finder and does things "by the book" (i have to agree with that). She can be sensitive if others are being critical of her work, especially if they have not carefully reviewed all the data (kaboom). Karess clarifies expectations before undertaking new projects, and she works hard to meet standards (sigurista). Karess will typically maintain a neat and orderly work environment (o rly?).

Karess is an optimistic individual. She is the type of person who loves exploring new places or things and a wide variety of experiences. She tends to display a natural charisma that draws others to her charm. Karess is a very encouraging person; others are drawn to her because they find her inspirational (aaawww).

Because she values relationships, Karess prefers to withdraw from conflict and avoid issues that may be confrontational (ahahahaha!). She may have a tendency to question her own ability to take charge, so she will tend to join in with a team or submit to strong authority. Karess is a "team player", and typically is excellent in a supporting role.

well? what do you guys think?

Happy Mother's Day y'all

It’s 3:30 in the morning as I type this and I’m thinking of a decent blog to write about Mother’s Day. Forgive my rambleness and randomness, \as I’m still trying my best to get the caffeine off of my system.

My mom taught me a lot of things: reading, fun, prayer, thankfulness…and affection. Mommy, as we fondly called her, was fiercely protective of her young. Kind of like mother elephants towards predators wanting their babies for lunch. I know comparing my mom to an elephant is not the most awesome illustration in the world, but bear with me.

Mommy was supportive of me. She didn’t like the fact that I enrolled myself in a course that did not guarantee big bucks or work stability, but she reveled in the fact that I was enjoying myself, that I loved what I was doing. She would pout whenever I wouldn’t send her the stuff I wrote. She hated the fact that I hid things from her, that I would go my own way.

Quite recently I told my mom about a huge decision that I wanted her to know about. I still wanted to hear what she wanted to say, in spite of the fact that she was a million miles away from me. The decision was so huge, it involved relocation and starting over in a completely new environment.

Instead of the reaction that I actually hoped to receive—a smile, a pat on the back, encouraging words, like of a job well done—I heard admonition amid high pitched tones. Rethink my decision, she said, in her signature sosyal bungangera way of saying things.

After a few moments of silence after hanging up, I realized that she made much sense. Here I was, in a job I liked, in a work shift I’d been desperately wishing for, in a house I just moved in to, and barely starting over. Barely getting the “responsibility” bit. Barely gotten on my two feet.

I finally got it after twenty-three years of existing. She wanted the best for me. Still does, and always will. I guess that’s how all moms are like. My mother was definitely not perfect, nor did she claim to be, but the greatest thing she ever…I honestly don’t know how to put it. I can only say that the greatest thing ever about her is this: she wanted the best for me and my sisters. Even if we screwed up and made mistakes, she still loved us unconditionally.

=================

Another mother I’d like to honor is the matriarch of the household that I currently live in. “Titaaaaaaa,” as I fondly call her, is someone I consider a surrogate mother of sorts, having mentioned earlier that my actual female parent is a million miles away.

I hardly know her—I’ve just lived here for three months—and at the same time I feel like I’ve known her for a long time. She, like my real mom, is fiercely protective of her five children. She was tough and knew her way around. In other words, she knew how to make diskarte. She was self-assured and possessed the wisdom that you don’t really hear anywhere else.

Truth be told, I have an affection for her that I really can’t explain in words, because they really won’t suffice. One thing I can say is this: she isn’t mushy, but she knew love. She knew and understood it, and gave much of it.  Not in the typical, but then again, Tita Paz is not typical in so many ways.

feelings are nothing more than feelings!!!

being an “artist” is not an excuse to slack off!

inspiration is not enough! inspiration will not feed me, or pay my bills, or let a roof stay on top of my head!

feelings are nothing more than feelings, ladies and gentlemen.

enough with the excuses already!

the 2009 birthday wish list

i have a friend who celebrated her birthday yesterday. being the curious (a.k.a. nosy) blog reader that i was, i decided to check out her Facebook notes. there i discovered her birthday wish list, composed of a few items that i thought were cute and so her. so basically, i thought of creating this list because i got inspirated with what she wrote, even if my 24th birthday is 39 days away.

here we go, kulugo!
  1. a brand new refrigerator. yes, dear friends and blog readers--all three of you. i wish to receive a brand new two-door refrigerator on my birthday, with all seriousness of heart. my current location does not provide such, and it can get really... sad, especially when i want to cook a huge batch of "experiments." besides, a lot of food spoilage contributes to reflessness, and i really hate it when food gets wasted just because it wasn't stored properly.  besides, how can i enjoy my birthday cake if it's not cold?
  2. a bouquet of flowers, because they're cute and nice to look at.  i like pink gerbera daisies, though. i don't think they have a scent, or do they?
  3. a new pair of glasses and contacts.
  4. a red Nokia E63. droolness much!
  5. a notebook-sized pink NIV bible that's easy to carry and can be found in the Victory Pioneer resource center. *wink, wink*
  6. a ______________________
so, there... my birthday wish list.   i may add or delete some items here as the days pass by... but this is pretty much what i can come up with right now. hey, a girl can dream, right?

musings over a monster coke float

So anyway, pumila ako at naghintay sa Monster Coke Float. . .

May kasabay ako sa kabilang pila, mag-ama. Bata pa yung anak na babae, mga 5-6 y/o siguro. Si Tatay, abala sa pag-order. Pero si Little Girl, dedma siya sa gulo sa paligid niya: sa dami ng tao, sa ingay, sa sikip, sa init. Siguro, magiging confusing pa yung sitwasyon sa kanya, cos she was meters shorter than everyone else. Eye-level lang niya ang legs ng lahat.

Pero somehow . . . She was so happy, so content being in the presence of her dad. Everything else seemed big, unfamiliar, and scary in comparison, but that didn't bother her. She was with her dad, and that was all that mattered.

I want to be like that little girl. . . that when everything seems big, unfamiliar, and scary, simply being with my Dad would render all those useless, worthless cares puny, minute, and miniscule.

maiksi lang 'to

naaappreciate ko ang mga taong nag-iimpart ng wisdom nila sa akin.

kala kasi natin minsan, tama ang lahat ng ginawa, ginagawa, at gagawin natin. we tend to stick to our guns, refusing to receive input from others who know better. "kaya ko na 'to, malaki na ako," katwiran natin. only at the end, na-realize natin na napaka-childish ng desisyon na ginawa natin.

it's a sobering experience whenever we receive pieces of advice from people who have "been there, been that." sobrang valuable ng mga maririnig natin sa kanila, masakit man o nakakadurog, dahil ang mga bagay na ito ay ginagawa nila para sa ating ikabubuti. nag-iinvest sila ng oras, effort, dugo, pawis, at laway sa atin, because they want the best for us. nakikita nila ang mga bagay na hindi natin nakikita.--o minsan, ayaw nating makita. o di kaya, ayaw nating tignan.

friends

i got this idea from Eauj Corpus's blog and RG's birthday blog. in both these blogs, they've expressed praise and gratitude to people who've helped build them up. i've thought about who these specific people were at this point in my life. i also would like to add the stuff i saw in their lives that i really admire, and  make me want to be like them when i grew up

here's my list, in no particular order:

Iris Torculas - strength of character, wisdom, and deep conviction.
Hazel Maranan - depth, passion, and security.
Eca Magno - toughness sheathed in velvet.
RG De Castro - persistence and desire to learn from good and bad situations.

grateful.

I'm stronger than before
Stronger than I'll ever be
And I raise my eyes to the one
The one who made me see
All what I thought was lost
But now is found
And I'm grateful

Grateful for the day
You called my name
Ever since you walked into the door
It's never been the same
Mornings are brighter now
I'm not afraid
And I wake up each day
With a smile on my face

Coz I've been in places
Where I couldn't even see
The light of day
And then you came

I'm grateful
You showed me the way back to my beautiful

Everything seems different now
Things are turned inside out
With a new pair of senses to go with around
It doesn't even matter
If I'm up or down

Blues are bluer
Smiles are brighter
It draws a tear whenever
I watch the sunsets paint the sky
I don't even mind walking under the rain
I never laughed like this before
And I'm gonna say it once more

Grateful - Julianne

i may not like the movie, but i LOVE this song.

There I was, an empty piece of a shell,
Just minding my own world;
Without even knowin' what love and life were all about
Then you came,
You brought me out of the shell;
You gave the world to me
And before I knew, there I was so in love with you

You gave me a reason for my being
And I love what I'm feelin'
You gave me a meaning to my life
Yes, I've gone beyond existing
And it all began when I met you

I love the touch of your hair
And when I look in your eyes
I just know, I know I'm on to something good
And I'm sure, my love for you will endure
Your love will light up my world;
And take all my cares away
With the aching part of me

You gave me a reason for my being
And I love what I'm feelin'
You gave me a meaning to my life
Yes, I've gone beyond existing
And it all began when I met you

You taught me how to love
You showed me how tomorrow and today
My love is diff'rent from the yesterday
I knew, you taught me to love
And darling I will always cherish you today
Tomorrow and forever

[...]

You gave me a reason for my being
And I love what I'm feelin'
You gave me a meaning to my life
Yes, I've gone beyond existing
And it all began when I met you

When I met you

You gave me a reason for my being
And I love what I'm feelin'
You gave me a meaning to my life
Yes, I've gone beyond existing
And it all began when I met you
When I met you

sometimes

things happen you never expect to happen. you wake up, wipe the drool of your cheek, eat breakfast, bathe, walk to the MRT station, ride a train, walk to your office. things seem pretty normal, typical even. you say hi to your officemates, share a joke with your seatmate, look for the IT personnel because your station couldn't start up.

and then something threatens to shake you to the very core of your being. like you never knew what tomorrow would bring and whatnot. and before you could ask why, like you usually would do...your soul stills and shuts up (as opposed to shuts down). and somehow everything else seems unimportant. what matters most is those loving pair of arms catching you, holding you tight. so this is what the "peace that transcends all understanding" is like, your surmise. you can never ever comprehend it or analyze it or figure it out.

you feel sad but not depressed. it's but normal. but you don't feel as lost as you used to.

and you know deep in your heart that you are fully loved, honored, appreciated, and cherished. nothing can take the place of that.

my three-day vaykay

because we had another change in schedule (yes, again ), i had been entitled to a wonderful, relaxing, amazing, super panalo talaga three-day vaykay.

today is day three of the vaykay, and honestly, i have never been this relaxed in a long time. normally i would hate the fact that i'd be going back to work tomorrow, but it just seems different this time around. i'm actually appreciating it. i didn't go out of town or go to a place i've never been in before. i just stayed home, cleaned my room, read, talked to people, visited a friend, played with my friend's babies, went online, read plurk and multiply posts, called my best friend on the phone. pretty simple stuff i admit i took for granted before.

i guess it boils down to making the most of every waking and sleeping moment that comes our way.

i love it when people have a sense of humor

and all these happened today.

1. my doorknob was having some technical problems this morning, which
are honestly hard to explain. since i hardly knew about fixing these
things, i decided to send an SMS to my "landlord"-slash-housemate
Tristan about it.

me: hi tristan! i think the doorknob is having problems. i don't know
how to describe it, hehe. i'll show it to you tomorrow.

minutes later...

New Message
Tristan D

Tristan: ok... nagsasalita siya?

2. i was feeling a little down and LSS-ing to david crowder band's "o,
for a thousand tongues to sing." i was so LSS with it, i posted a line
of the song on my plurk page (add me! my username is karess).

so it looked like this:

Karess says "there are so few words that never grow old..."

joyce, my friend, replied:

joycetwin "like young" (LOL)

oh, how i love a good laugh. :)

My Top 5 Strengths!!! WOOT WOOT!!!

here are the results of my Strengths Finder 2.0 test! *drumroll*

Intellection

People who are especially talented in the Intellection theme are characterized by their intellectual activity. They are introspective and appreciate intellectual discussions.

What makes you stand out?
It’s very likely that you derive much pleasure from pondering things deeply. After much forethought, you customarily reach conclusions, offer new ideas, suggest different ways of looking at situations, or ask probing questions. Because of your strengths, you are the ideal example of a person with an open and agile mind. Thinking consumes a great portion of your time. You like to exchange ideas with individuals who are as well-read as you are. Your passion for the written word fuels your thought processes and lays the groundwork for sophisticated conversations. When you are alone, you probably reflect upon the thoughts of brilliant writers or the findings of notable researchers. Driven by your talents, you eagerly welcome opportunities to think out loud about ideas, theories, or philosophies. You derive pleasure from conversations that force you to ponder matters that exist only in the realm of thought, not in reality. By nature, you value time alone to pursue your favorite pastime: thinking. Characteristically you scrutinize issues, theories, concepts, or philosophies from a variety of angles. Examining a topic is one way you familiarize yourself with its unique vocabulary. Often these terms are esoteric -- that is, understood by only a specialized group. Once you have thoroughly schooled yourself in a subject, you probably seek opportunities to speak and/or write about it. Instinctively, you have new ideas whirling around in your head much of the time. You are very interested in solving problems, conceiving new concepts, designing plans, or understanding everyday matters.

Input

People who are especially talented in the Input theme have a craving to know more. Often they like to collect and archive all kinds of information.

What makes you stand out?
Because of your strengths, you give yourself credit for reducing elaborate procedures, ideas, regulations, or systems to their fundamental parts. This explains why people ask you to tell them how things function and why other things malfunction. Instinctively, you can simplify the most complex, convoluted, or intricate procedure. People usually rely on you to offer clear and easy-to-comprehend explanations. It’s very likely that you yearn to know a lot. It
makes little sense to you to skim through a book and read only the highlights. You delve more deeply into intriguing subjects than most people do. You love to gather all kinds of information. This explains why you take time to grasp ideas that appear in print. By nature, you continually sharpen your methods for adding new words to your everyday vocabulary as well as your academic or professional vocabulary. You frequently use sophisticated terminology to make sure people who are well-educated about a topic or an issue really listen to what you say. Chances are good that you relish the nuances and intricacies of language. Your sophisticated or specialized vocabulary allows you to choose words for their power and clarity. Whether speaking or writing, you convey what you are thinking and feeling in a forceful, matter-of-fact manner. Usually no one has to second-guess -- that is, wonder about -- the true meaning of your intentions, messages, expectations, or orders.

Learner

People who are especially talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.

What makes you stand out?
By nature, you enjoy reflecting on what you already know and on what you want to know. Your concentration leads you to major and minor discoveries. You need ample quiet time to critically examine new information, theories, concepts, or philosophies. Wherever you go and whatever you do, your mind is seldom at rest. You consider what you have observed. You pose never-before-asked questions. Thinking deeply about things is a necessity for you. It is not a luxury. It is not an option. Driven by your talents, you are an individual performer. You typically welcome opportunities to acquire knowledge and ponder ideas on your own. You often seek and find solitary places where you can think without being distracted by people or noise. It’s very likely that you thirst for new ideas and knowledge. Often you lose yourself in a book. You pore over the ideas contained on its pages for long stretches of time. Why? You
want to absorb as much information as you can. Because of your strengths, you likely are an individual performer. You usually channel your mental and physical energy into things that really intrigue you. Instinctively, you spend considerable time examining exactly why something has gone wrong. Whenever you experience a personal or professional loss, make a mistake, or experience failure, you tend to investigate. You are likely to be restless until you
have answers to all your basic questions: What? How? When? Where? Who? Why?

Connectedness

People who are especially talented in the Connectedness theme have faith in the links between all things. They believe there are few coincidences and that almost every event has a reason.

What makes you stand out?
By nature, you sometimes like to help people overcome obstacles that prevent them from linking up with one another. This partially explains why you engage certain newcomers or outsiders in small talk as well as serious discussions. Driven by your talents, you know you are a strand in the intricate web of life. You search for ways to link with individuals who also ponder concepts, theories, or philosophies. In their company, you are apt to discover or rediscover your special place and purpose in life. Chances are good that you might build
bridges of understanding between certain historians and futurists. Perhaps you agree with Shakespeare, who wrote: "What's past is prologue." Sometimes you raise people's awareness by pointing out how past events affect the present and may affect the future. It’s very likely that you sense that everything in life is somehow interrelated and interdependent. This idea steels -- that is, fortifies -- you to calmly face most of life's challenges and difficulties. Instinctively, you occasionally help people realize they are part of the human family. With your guidance, perhaps they understand that their lives are intertwined with people they will never meet.

Adaptability

People who are especially talented in the Adaptability theme prefer to “go with the flow.” They tend to be “now” people who take things as they come and discover the future one day at a time.

What makes you stand out?
Driven by your talents, you may decide that all is well in your life when you allow each day to unfold on its own terms. You might feel restricted or boxed in by people who force you to adhere to their plans, processes, rules, or procedures. Occasionally you argue that people must be flexible as they plan for the future. Why? Life is filled with constant surprises and change. Perhaps you avoid creating undue stress for yourself or others by acknowledging this simple fact. It’s very likely that you now and then picture events or situations you might find yourself facing in the coming months, years, or decades. Sometimes you consider ways you might react when these circumstances materialize. Because of your strengths, you normally pay attention to the loveliness that surrounds you. This includes people as well as things. You see special qualities in individuals that distinguish them from everyone else. This ability allows you to adjust your style to match that of the person with whom you are working, studying, or playing. Instinctively, you might have an ability to accept and deal with each day as it unfolds. You may be flexible enough to handle unexpected discoveries and situations. By nature, you surround yourself with lovely things. These have the power to soothe, calm, energize, and inspire you. The arts or nature itself enhances your sense of well-being. You probably pay attention to your environment because you choose to live each moment to its fullest.

*****

1. I have a reason to wake up every morning!

2. I just moved to a new apartment and I am seriously loving it!

18. As I write this, I’m rocking out to 311.

19. I used to be madly in love with Nick Carter (of the Backstreet Boys) and Daniel Jones (of Savage Garden).

30. I’m madly in love, darned thankful, eternally grateful for You.
